Vintage Victorian Sugar Scuttle
Vintage
Vintage Ornate floral embossed Polished Silver-Plated Sugar Scuttle scoop ~ Made in JAPAN. A sugar scuttle is a decorative Victorian-era serving dish designed to hold and serve sugar cubes or loose sugar at the table. The scuttle functions much like an open sugar bowl, where guests would use a little scoop or tongs to transfer sugar into their coffee or tea. These vessels were highly popular during a time when sugar was often sold in large, hard loaves and broken into chunks or lumps. First introduced in the 1850s, it gets its name from its distinctive shape, which resembles the miniature coal scuttles used in homes of that era. Typically shaped like an open-topped, slanted bucket or scuttle, sitting on a pedestal foot with a looped handle. The vast majority were crafted from silver plate to make them affordable, though sterling silver examples exist as rare collector's items. At one time I believe this also may have had a back loop in addition to the top handle to hold a scoop, but it still looks perfectly sophisticated and styled the way it should be. They are often used as decorative antiques or repurposed to hold small items like candy, mints, or cotton swabs. Can also hold bath salts on the side of your tun. Measurements and all sides shown in photos. In great preowned vintage condition. Smoke free home.
