The chimaki from the Gion Festival originally originated from purifying oneself and praying for good health and freedom from illness, and has been revered as an amulet since ancient times.
In Kyoto, there is a custom of decorating them at the entrance for one year. Many people hang them high at the entrance of their homes.
As these are handmade, each one has a different shape, and there may be folds or damage to the paper.
