Description
This is a Sumba Island, Indonesia, Ikat Surindeng (shoulder wrap).
On islands around Sumba, cloths with red or rust colors were for the noble class, while commoners used plain indigo-dyed fabrics.
Because dyed fabrics were cherished, they have survived in good condition, whereas indigo-dyed fabrics were often treated carelessly and have not remained.
While large Sumba Ikat cloths (waist cloths) are commonly found, smaller items like this seem to be rarer.
The condition is good, and it appears to have been used very little.
I acquired this shoulder wrap as an antique textile nearly 30 years ago. Considering that, I believe it is about 60 years old now, and it has remained in beautiful condition with minimal use.
