Trout fishing season opens! Machine-sharpened full-tang sword knife that can shave even fine hairs
Thank you for viewing. Introducing a robust full-tang knife (sword-nara class) with a blade thickness of approximately 5mm, a blade length of approximately 215mm, and a weight of approximately 350 grams. Knives of this class are expected to be used for tasks like clearing brush, involving downward swings towards vegetation, so a sharp angle cannot be used for the blade edge. However, this knife has been sharpened to a total of 40 degrees (20 degrees per side) using the Swedish sharpening machine TORMEK T-8, which is not a sharp angle. Despite this, its sharpness is honed to the point where it can easily shave off the fine hairs on your arm, much like a finely sharpened Japanese sword.
The steel used is AUS-8, a high-carbon stainless steel for cutlery proudly produced by Aichi Steel in Japan. In 2025, it surprised knife enthusiasts when Schrade, a British company once renowned for its batoning knives like the SCHF36, switched from Chinese steel to this material. AUS-8 is a reliable and proven steel. With a carbon content of 0.75-0.9% and 14% chromium, along with molybdenum and vanadium added to enhance toughness and wear resistance, reports indicate that it maintains its sharpness longer than 1075 carbon steel or 440C stainless steel, which lack these additives. Furthermore, it is easy to resharpen even with common water stones, which is why it is widely used for household kitchen knives.
Although this item has a thick blade, the choil is hollow-ground and the spine is beveled, significantly reducing the thickness near the edge. This design ensures that even after prolonged use and sharpening, the edge width will not increase, eliminating the need to re-grind the spine. At first glance, it may resemble a sword, but it has no curvature in the blade and features a ricasso with a finger guard, thus it does not fall under the definition of sword as stipulated by the Swords and Firearms Control Law. Please utilize its length for peaceful purposes such as thinly slicing bread and cheese, filleting fish, or cutting large pieces of meat. Due to its size and shape, it is advisable to carry it in a bag and wrap it with a towel from the outside of the sheath to avoid attracting unnecessary attention from the police. The sheath is also thick and securely holds the knife.
