His real name was Claude Gellée. Born in Chamagne, in the Lorraine region of northeastern France. According to the biography by Sandrart, he moved to Rome at the age of 12 and became an apprentice confectioner, but soon abandoned that path and turned to painting. He returned to his home country temporarily in 1625, but returned to Rome the following year and worked there until his death. In his early period, he studied under A. Tassi and learned from the Bamboccianti and P. Bril, soon establishing a format with large trees and architecture as frames, and frequently depicted seascapes and landscapes in pairs. In the mid-1630s in Rome, Claude's paintings gained considerable acclaim. The sketchbook Liber Veritatis, which he began around that time, is said to have been created to record his compositions to prevent frequent forgeries. From around 1640, he became deeply aware of the importance of subject matter, incorporating biblical and mythological figures into landscapes based on his established format, and fulfilling commissions from patrons across Europe who requested narrative elements. After 1650, the pink and orange light that had colored his canvases gave way to cooler tones, while his interpretation of subjects became more tailored to the patron's personal preferences, lending his works a more private character. Over his approximately half-century career, he left behind nearly 300 paintings, over 1200 drawings, and 51 etchings, greatly influencing later Western European landscape painters such as J. F. Breamen, C. J. Vernet, R. Wilson, and W. Turner.
